How heavy is a FIBERTOP manhole cover?

The weight of an M.M. manhole cover depends on its shape, its size and its load class. If compared to the same type made of cast iron, the M.M. manhole cover can be 60% lighter.

Class Type Hole  FIBERTOP kg Cast iron kg

Many clients wonder how it is possible for the composite M.M. manhole covers to be so light and still have a high mechanical resistance. This derives from the inherent properties of the composite material used by M.M.: fiberglass, i. e. resin which has been reinforced with glass fiber, with a studied stratigraphy and the specific manufacturing process called SMC manufacturing (Sheet Molding Compound).  M.M.’s manhole covers are in fact are made with a made with a sheet moulding compound process at a controlled temperature using thermosetting resins, fiberglass and other additives.

Due to their lightweight, M.M. manhole covers made of composite material are easy to handle, even when dealing with great quantities, without the need to use any mechanical lifting equipment. Furthermore, due to its lightweight  the product is easy to install with a considerable reduction of costs for transportation. This aspect, is often neglected but for M.M. it remains of paramount importance since it can contribute to the reduction of pollutant emissions.
